Purpose:
Overdoses from illicit fentanyl remain a threat to adolescents and young adults in the United States. Prevention programs for parents/caregivers can be important to address this crisis. This evaluation assesses changes in adults' fentanyl-related knowledge, perceptions, and communication efforts after attending a parent fentanyl awareness film presentation.
Methods:
A 4-wave pre-post evaluation with follow-up of Song for Charlie's The New Drug Talk parent fentanyl education presentation from November 2024 to December 2025. Participants' knowledge of and perceptions about fentanyl and intentions to and self-efficacy with discussing fentanyl with their children were measured. Data were analyzed by independent-sample proportions tests, t-tests, and odds ratio analyses using SPSS.
Results:
274 and 276 participants completed the pre- and post-presentation surveys, respectively; n = 44 completed the opt-in follow-up surveys. Following the presentation, participants' general knowledge (p < 0.05), knowledge of fentanyl's definition (p < 0.05), overdose symptoms (p < 0.001), and naloxone effects (p < 0.01) increased. Following the presentation, participants reported greater concern with pill misuse (p < 0.05) and their child's likelihood of fentanyl exposure (p < 0.05) and increased confidence in their ability to administer naloxone (p < 0.001) and discuss fentanyl with their children (p < 0.05). Fentanyl knowledge, confidence with naloxone use, and conversation abilities remained high at 1-week and 2-month follow-ups.
Conclusions:
The 90-minute presentation was associated with positive changes in knowledge about and concern over fentanyl and greater confidence in administering naloxone and discussing fentanyl with their children. Future evaluations should assess program efficacy nationally.
