Geomorphic characteristics and basin evolution of the river basin in southern India: A morphometric perspective

Abstract:
This paper aims to assess the morphometric characteristics of the Gundar River Basin in southern Tamil Nadu, thereby enabling us to understand the region's hydrologic regime and geomorphic evolution. The morphometric analysis was conducted by extracting linear, area, and relief characteristics from the DEM generated from the SRTM dataset using GIS software. The morphometric analysis has revealed a dendritic drainage pattern, which is typical in lithologically homogeneous regions with minimal structural influence. The morphometric analysis has shown a high degree of integration and maturity in the fluvial geomorphic processes in the region. The shape and drainage characteristics have revealed an elongated configuration with moderate runoff and infiltration responses. The relief characteristics have revealed a subdued topography with long-term denudation processes in a stable environment. The morphometric analysis would enable us to understand the hydrologic regime and geomorphic evolution in the region, which would serve as a scientific tool in groundwater exploration, soil conservation, and land use in semi-arid coastal regions.
