The unique perspectives of surgeons who have transitioned into executive leadership roles provide valuable insights into effective communication, leadership, and the future of health care. In this special edition editorial, Dr Julie Freischlag shares her story and personal approach to leadership. Throughout her career in vascular surgery and executive health care administration, she has maintained a distinctive leadership style that is characterized by personal connections and relationships. This editorial provides reflections on the importance of advocacy and team building, as well as how to effectively build a culture of respect and excellence.
