Background:
Hallux valgus is one of the most common foot deformities in adults. In addition to established open procedures-ranging from distal metatarsal osteotomy to first tarsometatarsal (TMT-I) arthrodesis-modern minimally invasive techniques have gained increasing clinical relevance.
Methods And Results:
This article provides a comprehensive overview of third- and fourth-generation MIS hallux valgus techniques, including the minimally invasive Chevron-Akin osteotomy (MICA), percutaneous Chevron-Akin osteotomy (PECA) and MIS Scarf osteotomy. Mid- and long-term outcomes are comparable to those of open procedures, while short-term advantages are evident in terms of mobility, pain intensity and analgesic requirements.
Conclusion:
MIS techniques represent a safe and effective complement to open surgery. The choice of procedure should be individualized, taking into account the severity of the deformity, TMT‑I stability and the surgeon's experience. However, increased intraoperative radiation exposure remains a notable drawback. Broader evidence from prospective comparative trials is still needed.
