Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about the way you...

Area of Science:

  • Social Sciences
  • Environmental Psychology
  • Community Energy

Background:

  • Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are crucial for energy transition.
  • Understanding citizen participation drivers is key for REC success.
  • Psychosocial factors at multiple levels influence engagement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify distinct psychosocial profiles of potential REC participants in Italy.
  • To examine how individual, community, and societal factors shape participation intentions.
  • To explore the relationship between psychosocial profiles and stated participation intentions.

Main Methods:

  • Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) of 580 Italian citizens.
  • Utilized 11 indicators across individual, community, and societal levels.
  • Assessed Pro-environmental Values, Civic Engagement, Motivation, Acceptability, Sense of Community, Trust, Common Good Orientation, Responsible Togetherness, and Communication Clarity.

Main Results:

  • Three distinct profiles identified: Civic-minded Interested (35.5%), Uncommitted (56.4%), and Private-minded Uninterested (8.1%).
  • Counterintuitively, the Private-minded profile reported the highest stated participation intention (72.3%).
  • No significant differences in preferred engagement levels across profiles were found.

Conclusions:

  • REC participation is a multilevel phenomenon influenced by diverse psychosocial factors.
  • Stated participation intentions may not fully align with underlying psychosocial resources for sustained engagement.
  • Differentiated engagement strategies and capacity building are needed for varied psychosocial configurations.
