Summary

Pediatric residency program directors largely incorporate Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) into curricula and anticipate future assessment capabilities for trainees. Most EPAs are expected to be assessable and achievable by graduation within three years.

Background:

The General Pediatrics Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) define expected residency training outcomes.
A revised set of EPAs necessitates understanding program directors' (PDs) perspectives.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess PDs' views on integrating revised EPAs into curricula.
To evaluate current and future readiness for assessing trainee performance of EPAs.
To gauge confidence in preparing residents for EPA execution.

Main Methods:

A survey was distributed to all United States pediatric and medicine-pediatric PDs in 2024.
The survey collected data on EPA curriculum inclusion, assessment strategies, and trainee preparedness.

Main Results:

Over 90% of PDs reported that 10 out of 13 EPAs are included in their curriculum.
Assessment readiness exists for only 2 out of 13 EPAs currently.
PDs anticipate being able to assess and prepare residents for 8-11 EPAs within 2-3 years.

Conclusions:

Most EPAs are currently integrated into pediatric residency curricula.
PDs express confidence in developing assessment strategies and preparing graduates for most EPAs in the near future.
Support is needed to fully implement and assess all revised EPAs.
