Abstract:
This qualitative study examined the impact of adapted physical activity (APA) service learning on undergraduate kinesiology students' personal development, professional competencies, and career preparation. Participants were 25 kinesiology students enrolled in an APA course at a university in the southwestern United States who engaged in a 6-week APA service learning project serving children and young people with disabilities. Data were collected through structured reflection essays completed by all participants at the conclusion of the project and analyzed using directed content analysis guided by Kolb's experiential learning theory. Four themes emerged: (a) development of essential professional skills (patience, adaptability, and communication); (b) increased understanding and confidence working with people with disabilities; (c) personal growth characterized by empathy, gratitude, and advocacy; and (d) career affirmation, redirection, and expansion. Findings demonstrate that APA service learning fosters integrated personal, professional, and career outcomes, highlighting the value of experiential learning in preparing kinesiology students for inclusive practice and advocacy-oriented careers.
