  • Participants wore toric and spherical equivalent SCLs for one week each.
  • Binocular visual acuity and reading performance (reading speed, fixation metrics, saccades, regressions) were measured using standardized Chinese passages and the EyeLink 1000 Plus.
  • Main Results:

    • Toric SCLs significantly improved intermediate visual acuity at 66 cm compared to spherical equivalent lenses.
    • Reading speed for Chinese passages was significantly faster with toric lenses (345.37 vs. 322.49 cpm).
    • Toric correction led to more efficient eye movements, including fewer fixations per word, fewer total fixations, fewer saccades, and fewer regressions.

    Conclusions:

    • Toric SCLs enhance intermediate visual acuity and Chinese reading performance in young adults with low-to-moderate astigmatism.
    • These findings support the functional advantages of full astigmatic correction for mid-range reading tasks.
