Background:
Postgraduate fellowships for Doctor of Pharmacy students are diverse in their nature and expectations. Although fellowships have long been an avenue for advanced training, the lack of a centralized accreditation process means students are often navigating these opportunities on their own. The objective of this paper is to describe the structure and preliminary outcomes of the fellowship portion of a novel Fellowship and Residency Advising Program (FRAP) at an urban public university.
Educational Activity:
The fellowship portion of FRAP facilitates progression to postgraduate training programs in industry, academia, government, and professional organizations. Students receive support in identifying programs of interest, preparing application materials, and mentorship from a faculty member and an alumnus in the field. Additional activities have been added to increase fellowship preparation over the years. Student fellowship placements are tracked. Data is available for the graduating classes of 2016 to 2025.
Evaluation Findings:
FRAP has evolved since it was first introduced in 2015 with the addition of a formal fellowship pathway in 2019. Forty-six students have successfully obtained fellowships since the program's inception.
Summary:
The FRAP framework of dual mentorship, a repository of resources, and industry panels for pharmacy students pursuing fellowships may be useful for other institutions to implement.
