Abstract:
Type 1 diabetes is a disease caused by the autoimmune destruction of insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cells. The replacement of beta cells according to the Edmonton protocol has opened new therapeutic avenues for restoring physiological regulation of insulin secretion and reducing comorbidities. Current advancements in stem cell differentiation and transplantation hold promise for overcoming the limitations of the Edmonton protocol and improving disease remission. This review analyzes clinical data, highlighting the benefits and challenges of these approaches, twenty-five years after their implementation.
