This study seeks to explore the characteristics and influence mechanism of carbon emissions in the construction stage of a plateau railway, formulate a scientific and reasonable carbon emission control strategy, and realize the sustainable development and carbon neutralization goal of railway construction. Taking the railway project in the typical complex terrain area of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau as the object, the carbon emission coefficient method is used to quantify the carbon emission in the construction stage of the plateau railway, and the CatBoost-SHAP model is used to interpret the heterogeneity of carbon emission in the construction stage of the plateau railway. Through ArcGIS visualization, the impact, characteristic contribution, and interaction effect of engineering and environmental characteristics on carbon emission are quantitatively analyzed. The results showed that the carbon emissions were distributed in strips along the road, and the canyon section and tunnel group area were high value areas. The contribution of engineering characteristics such as the bridge-tunnel ratio, material consumption, and energy consumption was dominant. Altitude and surrounding rock grade significantly adjusted the emission intensity through equipment efficiency and material loss, and there was a synergistic amplification effect between engineering parameters and environmental factors. The research revealed that the carbon emission of the plateau railway was strongly related to the spatial organization of construction activities and terrain complexity, which provides theoretical support and a practical path for low-carbon design and construction optimization of engineering and also provides forward-looking solutions for carbon emission control of infrastructure construction in extreme environments. It is of great practical significance to promote the railway construction industry to achieve carbon neutrality.
