Abstract:
Combining experiments and theory, we demonstrate that alloying oxidized Pt with earth-abundant transition metals (e.g. Fe, Ti, Mn) enhances ORR activity by optimizing the occupancy of the surface Pt 5d orbitals. Specifically, PtFeOx (<10 at% Fe) achieved peak performance, which directly correlates with mixed surface Pt oxidation states (0, +2, +4).
