Herein, MOF-derived Cu/C catalysts for nitrate reduction to ammonia were fabricated via gradient-temperature pyrolysis. Cu/C-700 showed superior NRA activity through synergistic regulation of pyrolysis-tailored physicochemical properties. Specifically, carbon defects optimized Cu electronic states for high intrinsic activity, and large ECSA supplied abundant active sites to boost overall activity.
