Practical Considerations of Resilience and Robustness Within the Stress Architecture of Beef Stocker Calves

Abstract:
The stocker phase represents a critical period in beef production during which calves encounter multiple stressors that influence short-term and long-term health and performance. Resilience is defined as the capacity of an animal to recover from stress, whereas robustness is the ability to maintain normal functions during stress. These concepts provide a practical framework for understanding the variation in health and performance outcomes among newly received stocker calves managed similarly. This review examines some of the biological foundations of resilience and robustness and suggests management approaches to support veterinary decision-making in stocker cattle production systems.
