Abstract:
The high-value conversion of alkenes and H2O is a meaningful but challenging topic. We herein present the novel and significant product orientation of styrene and H2O, enabling the direct construction of 1,4-diketones from the simplest of materials. Different from the known methods, this transformation not only eliminated the demand for presynthesis, oxidants, and metals but also exhibited simple and atom-economic conditions. In addition, control experiments suggested that a radical pathway was involved, and the typical intermediates were detected and isolated. These findings opened up the possibility of dimerized alkenes and H2O and highlighted the potential of the electrochemical dimerization strategy.

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
