Applications of [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose PET Imaging in Colorectal Cancer

Abstract:
Imaging plays a crucial role in the accurate staging of colorectal cancer and guides treatment strategy. Computed tomography (CT) and MR imaging remain the mainstays of anatomic evaluation. [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/CT provides complementary functional and morphologic information. Although not routinely recommended for initial staging, it is valuable in selected scenarios, particularly for detecting recurrence in patients with rising serum carcinoembryonic antigen levels and equivocal conventional imaging. FDG PET/CT also enables early treatment response assessment and provides prognostic information. Emerging tracers such as fibroblast activation protein inhibitor and advances in molecular imaging are expected to further refine its role.
