Intergenerational cohousing is expected to contribute to positive aging, reducing loneliness and financial insecurity, all of which are also known as protective against elder abuse. Yet cohousing could create an environment for older adults' abuse to occur, and current legal and social responses are inadequate to address it. Individual recommendations such as charters and design safeguards exist, but they are not sufficient. This article commentary proposes a holistic set of mechanisms which can prevent and address abuse. Together, these coordinated design elements facilitate structures and processes in cohousing that work together to counteract and respond to abuse.
