Cultural Memory, Future Health Promotion, and the Ghosts of Mining Work in Cornwall, England

This interpretive commentary began with a question: what remains after the mines close? Living in Cornwall, I have encountered fragments of an unfinished story: memories shared casually on buses, in pubs, and in conversations with residents who carry the traces of mining's past. These stories are rarely told as accounts of health or trauma, but they reveal histories of occupational illness, masculine silence, family loss, and enduring forms of care. Drawing on mnemohistory and the idea of "ghost archives," I explore how Cornwall's mining past continues to shape present health experiences, particularly around male vulnerability, mental health, and help-seeking. Not treating memory as nostalgia, I argue that memories, silences, and everyday narratives are forms of health knowledge. Community storytelling and local archives can create spaces where overlooked experiences are recognized and witnessed. This short piece is an invitation to health communicators: before asking communities to change, we must learn to listen to the ghosts that continue to speak.
