Serious Game for Long Term Oxygen Therapy Education: Initial Results in Undergraduate Medical Students

Abstract:
Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is a treatment commonly prescribed for patients with chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, and pulmonary hypertension, as well as for palliative management. Despite its wide use, both clinicians and patients report insufficient education on LTOT, particularly in non-specialized settings. This study presents the initial results of a developed serious game aimed at teaching core LTOT concepts. The game includes eight interactive clinical scenarios covering indications, initial assessment, device types, daily use, follow-up, equipment maintenance, complications, and special situations. A total of 120 fourth-year medical students participated over two academic years and completed pre- and post-intervention questionnaires. All students completed the game, with high engagement and overall performance. Knowledge significantly improved after the intervention, with a meaningful increase in correct responses. These findings suggest that a serious game may be an effective educational tool for improving LTOT knowledge among preclinical medical students and could be expanded to other health professionals, patients, and caregivers.
