Abstract:
Through the combination of distinctive physicochemical characteristics, such as a large surface area, versatile functionality, and enhanced reactivity in coordination chemistry, a promising class of entities known as Schiff base nanoparticles is formed, which can be tailored for environmental applications. Owing to their high surface area, adjustable electronic structure, and strong metal-ligand interactions, these nanostructures are effective in addressing environmental issues such as water purification, pollutant degradation, and chemical sensing. This review critically examines the synthesis protocols for Schiff base nanoparticles, the characterization techniques for understanding structure-function correlations, and the implications of Schiff base functionalized nanoparticles across a variety of environmental contexts. These nanomaterials exhibit distinct attributes, including adsorption capacity, catalytic activity, heavy-metal removal, degradation of organic pollutants (e.g., dyes, pesticides), and mitigation of microbial contamination. Despite these advantages, challenges related to toxicity, scalability, cost, and long-term environmental stability still exist despite their potential. Future perspectives emphasize green synthesis, the incorporation of innovative nanomaterials (including metal-organic frameworks and graphene), and the development of sophisticated, multifunctional systems facilitated by AI-driven design. Overall, this review aims to provide a framework for advancing Schiff base nanoparticles toward sustainable, real-world environmental applications.
