Objective:
To develop the WorkDEM Compass, a practical tool that supports continued employment for individuals with YOD.
Methods:
A user-centered iterative design process was used to develop the Compass. Insights from previous research were used to develop the Compass in two co-creation sessions with stakeholders from the Dutch governmental (n = 3), voluntary work supervisor (n = 1), employees with dementia (n = 5), caregiver (n = 1), HR and employers (n = 6), occupational physicians & labor experts (n = 4) and healthcare professionals (n = 13).
Results:
Co-creation sessions guided the design of the Compass as a website including information and several tools. It was deliberately chosen to offer different types of information, both factual, evidence-based content and experiential narratives. The tools included a signal card to improve recognition of YOD in the workplace, an inspiration kit to support continued employment, a handout containing legal and financial information, and conversational aids to address communication. The Compass may therewith facilitate early recognition, improve communication between stakeholders, and promote shared responsibility among stakeholders.
Conclusion:
The WorkDEM Compass offers a practical approach to support continued employment for persons with YOD. The Compass has the potential to reduce premature job loss and enhance work participation. Future research should evaluate its feasibility, usability, and impact in practice.
