Abstract:
Despite the progress made in the last few decades in diagnosis and therapy, children and adolescents still die of asthma worldwide. In this study, we collected all asthma-related death events in Italian children and adolescents (0-19 years old) from 2013 to 2023 through the Italian National Statistical Database. 46 deaths were recorded, with a mortality rate of 0.39 per million individuals aged 0-19 years old (population denominator: 10.7 million), with the highest number of deaths observed in North-East Regions (36.9%) and 39/46 (84.7%) deaths between 10 and 19 years old. Factors associated with fatal asthma are also discussed. Targeted preventive strategies and further research are called for, particularly in high-incidence regions and adolescents.
