Purpose:
To evaluate the morphometric eye characteristics of the children of patients with primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) aged 19-40 years, compared to healthy controls.
Methods:
This cross-sectional study involved 44 eyes of 22 prepresbyopic children of patients with PACG and 44 eyes of 22 sex- and age-matched healthy subjects with no parental history of glaucoma. For both groups, biometric measurements for the anterior segment were performed using the Sirius topographer. These measurements are central corneal thickness (CCT), iridocorneal angle (ICA), anterior chamber volume (ACV), anterior chamber depth (ACD), axial length (AL), horizontal anterior chamber diameter (HACD), macular ganglion cell layer (GCL), peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), and topographic disc measurements.
Results:
The ACD, ACV, ICA, and HACD values of the study group were significantly lower than the control group (p < 0.05 for all). The study group had significantly lower AL values (22.99 ± 0.17 mm) than the control group (23.64 ± 0.17 mm) (p < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were found between the study and control groups regarding the CCT values, the global mean of macular GCL, and peripapillary RNFL measurements, or optic disc topographic measurements (p > 0.05).
Conclusion:
The results showed no statistical differences in GCL, RNFL, and disc topographic measurements between the children of patients with PACG and sex- and age-matched healthy subjects without a positive family history. However, AL, ICA, ACD, ACV, and HACD were significantly lower in the prepresbyopic children of patients with PACG.
