Abstract:
Apoptosis during oogenesis is evolutionarily conserved across metazoans and is essential for eliminating defective developing oocytes, thereby maintaining tissue homeostasis and preventing pathologies such as cancer. In their work, Udodirim (Udo) Saydee-Onwubiko, Amy Shaub Maddox and colleagues resolve a previous conundrum in the field by revealing that apoptosis is essential for fertility and for maintaining the homeostatic germline architecture required for faithful oogenesis.
