Abstract:
An efficient visible-light-driven iron-catalyzed atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reaction of chloroform to alkenes has been developed. Under the optimized conditions, the reaction affords a range of 1,3,3-trichloroalkanes with high atom economy and tolerance of various functional groups. Preliminary mechanistic experiments support a radical-mediated pathway for this ATRA process. This work establishes a low-cost, sustainable, and green approach for dichloromethylation via the activation of abundant and inexpensive chloroform.

In the initiation step of the reaction, the chlorine molecule undergoes homolytic cleavage in the presence of light or heat, forming two highly reactive chlorine radicals. Propagation occurs in two...

Halogenation of Alkenes
Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate.
Radical Anti-Markovnikov Addition to Alkenes: Mechanism
The mechanism starts with chain initiation, which involves two steps. In the first chain initiation step, a weak peroxide bond is homolytically cleaved upon mild heating to form two alkoxy radicals. In the second initiation step, a hydrogen atom is abstracted by the alkoxy radical...
