A mild and efficient photoredox-catalyzed trifluoroethoxyfluorination of alkenes is reported. Notably, by simply switching the halides, the reaction system can be readily steered toward tunable trifluoroethoxychlorination or trifluoroethoxybromination. The synthetic practicality of this approach is further substantiated through its application to the late-stage modification of alkene-containing natural products and pharmaceuticals.

Consider the bromination of cyclopentene. Molecular bromine is polarized in the proximity of the π electrons of cyclopentene. An electrophilic bromine atom adds across the double bond, forming a cyclic bromonium ion intermediate.
