This conceptual paper proposes an ecological dynamics perspective as a theoretically coherent and practical framework for handball coaching, education and sport science. Handball is a fast-paced, complex sport in which skilled performance cannot be reduced to the execution of stored movement programmes. Drawing on Bernstein's analysis of the degrees of freedom problem and the principle of repetition without repetition, Newell's model of interacting constraints, and Gibson's ecological theory of direct perception and affordances, we articulate a conceptualisation of skill adaptation in which the player is understood as a complex, self-organising system continuously coupled to their environment. Skill in handball, on this account, is not a fixed property of the player but a relational one, realised in the performer-environment system through the coupling of the player's perceptual-motor capacities and the affordance structure of the performance context. A central intention of this paper is to dissolve the traditional analytical distinction between technical, tactical, physical and psychological components of skilled performance. In the living, adapting player, these are not separable dimensions but mutually constitutive features of a single, integrated perceptual-motor system. Functional skill is an emergent phenomenon of what conventional sport science has artificially decomposed into discrete components. The paper makes two interrelated contributions: a conceptual account of skill adaptation for handball across individual, dyadic, and collective team levels; and a methodological account proposing a task design model grounded in representative learning design, repetition without repetition, and constraints manipulation, applicable across the full developmental arc from children's first encounters with handball to elite performers.
