Community Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery: A Proposal

Background:
Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgery (PRAS) faces domain erosion from adjacent specialties and jurisdictional competition. To maintain clinical authority and address modern healthcare complexities, PRAS must evolve beyond an organ-specific, micro-scale procedural focus toward an interdisciplinary paradigm that integrates medical sciences, ethics, cultural, medicolegal frameworks and socio-economic frameworks.
Objective:
To propose Community Plastic Surgery as a formalized, population-oriented interdisciplinary subspecialty within PRAS that shifts practice from individual pathology management to a macro-scale, holistic model of societal health.
Proposed Methods:
A conceptual framework was developed by synthesizing current interdisciplinary models in PRAS (e.g., hand surgery, craniofacial surgery, oncoplastic surgery) and incorporating socio-cultural, ethics and medicolegal, economic, and managerial frameworks. The subspecialty's implementation was structured into four interconnected domains supported by Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM), Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), and Artificial Intelligence (AI): clinical practice, education and training, research and innovation, and policy and community engagement.
Population Oriented Pras:
Community Plastic Surgery bridges clinical practice with public health through accredited educational and training modules. The framework formalizes charitable surgical initiatives, optimizes equitable care accessibility, incorporates cultural competency in both reconstructive and aesthetic domains, and establishes rigorous standards for outcome assessment and socio-medical research.
Paradigm Of Social Responsibility:
Establishing Community Plastic Surgery represents a vital paradigm shift toward social responsibility and stewardship in PRAS. By institutionalizing this interdisciplinary subspecialty through standardized accreditation, PRAS expands its clinical relevance and ensures a sustainable, humanistically grounded future in global healthcare.
