Association between estimated glucose disposal rate and benign prostatic hyperplasia: results from two nationally

Background:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a prevalent condition among older men, has not been sufficiently explored in terms of its association with the estimated glucose disposal rate (eGDR) within American and Chinese populations.
Methods:
Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were examined. We computed indices pertinent to eGDR for every participant and subsequently utilized multivariate regression, restricted cubic splines (RCS), subgroup analysis, and mediation analysis.
Results:
This study included 4382 CHARLS participants and 3463 NHANES participants. In our study, we found that an inverse relationship was found between eGDR and BPH in both the CHARLS and NHANES populations. RCS revealed a significant linear relationship between eGDR and BPH in both study populations. Subgroup analyses showed that the effect of eGDR on BPH risk was consistent across all the examined subgroups. The mediation effect model in the NHANES population showed that the mediating effect of monocyte was significant at -15.14% (p < 0.0001).
Conclusions:
Our research shows a negative link between eGDR and the risk of BPH in elderly American and Chinese males, with monocytes potentially acting as a partial mediator in this relationship.
