Paddle-to-podium: A case study of sprint-paddle technique training in an elite female surfer

Abstract:
Coinciding with the return of female surfers to Teahupo'o for the 2024 Olympics, this case study aimed to improve sprint-paddling performance in an elite female surfer through an individualised technique training intervention. Sprint paddling is essential for catching waves of consequence like Teahupo'o. The research design included baseline testing, a two-week control phase, a two-week training intervention with pre- and post-assessments, a two-week retention phase, and follow-up testing. Ten 1-hr technique training sessions targeted the catch and recovery (reach) phases of the stroke cycle. Sessions followed a constraints-led approach with task manipulations driving technical adaptation. Outcome measures included sprint-paddling velocity, spatiotemporal variables, upper-body strength and range of motion, and perceived paddling proficiency. Post-intervention, the athlete demonstrated increased acceleration (pre: 5.84 s at 8-9 m; post: 3.52 s at 4-5 m), reduced stroke count (pre: 23; post: 20), increased stroke distances (pre: R = 1.32 m, L = 1.35 m; post: R = 1.54 m; L = 1.51 m), upper-body strength gains (1RM pull-up: pre = 15 kg, post = 17.5 kg), and self-reported improvements in perception of sprint-paddling proficiency, including catching waves of consequence. Researchers and coaches are encouraged to adopt individualised, collaborative, multidisciplinary strategies that emphasise training tailored to the unique needs of elite female athletes.
