Expanding the Recovery Support Workforce: Implementation of the Illinois CRSS Success Program

In response to increasing demand for peer support workers (PSWs), most states administer training programs for individuals interested in entering this workforce. However, few studies have explored the process of implementing these programs.

The Illinois CRSS Success Program prepares students to obtain either (or both) the Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) or Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential. This qualitative case study aims to examine facilitators, challenges, and successes related to the program's implementation at 11 institutions.

Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews with program staff, including program coordinators (n=11), instructors (n=11), and student success coaches (n=8) and facilitated two focus groups with students and recent alumni (n=10). At least two staff, students, or recent alumni from the 11 institutions implementing the CRSS Success Program participated in an interview or focus group.

Semi-structured interviews and focus groups uncovered themes related to balancing equitable recruitment and readiness for success, navigating flexibility and standardization in course delivery, implementing internships in a shifting peer recovery support service landscape, preparing for credentialing exams with unclear expectations, supporting student success through comprehensive resources and support, building a supportive and collaborative learning community, and facilitating opportunities to increase purpose.

As demand for peer support workers continues to grow, it is essential that Illinois and other entities continue to offer and expand accessible and high-quality training programs to equip them with skills and knowledge to be successful in the field. Employers that hire PSWs should also prioritize professional development and competitive salaries to increase retention and strengthen the workforce.
