Hydraulic Hose-Related Blunt Trauma: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Objective:
Blunt trauma from ruptured hydraulic hoses is poorly characterized. We described patterns and outcomes of hydraulic hose-related blunt trauma (HHRBT).
Methods:
In this retrospective cohort study, adults presenting with blunt injuries from ruptured or recoiling pressurized hydraulic hoses were included. Severe injury required fracture, major organ injury, surgery, prolonged hospitalization, transfer, or neurovascular injury.
Results:
Of 151 patients (median age 33 years; IQR 27-39), all were male and 98.7% worked in mining. Head and neck region was most commonly affected (60.9%), followed by upper extremity (23.2%) and ocular injuries (22.5%). Severe injuries occurred in 12.6%.
Conclusions:
HHRBT is a poorly characterized occupational trauma mechanism with predominant head, neck, and ocular involvement, potentially causing significant craniofacial, ocular, and internal injuries, emphasizing clinical assessment and workplace prevention.
