What is new in cardiac anesthesia in 2024?

Abstract:
Recent advances in cardiac anesthesia have led to improved patient care and safety. In 2024, there is a growing focus on patient-centered approaches aimed at improving overall outcomes. This includes the adoption of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) protocols to promote faster recovery and enhance patient satisfaction, multimodal pain management strategies to minimize opioid use while improving patient comfort, and conservative blood transfusion practices to mitigate risk and enhance the quality of patient care. The expansion of anesthesia practice beyond traditional operating rooms offers greater flexibility and efficacy in managing patients during diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Technological innovations are also transforming the field. The role of pulmonary artery catheterization in perioperative cardiopulmonary function monitoring and management for high-risk patients remains a subject of debate. Concurrently, continuous assessment of cardiac and pulmonary function, coupled with the development of clinically relevant cardiac biomarkers, more specific medications, and enhanced monitoring devices, contributes to better management and perioperative outcomes. Furthermore, machine learning (ML) algorithms, artificial intelligence (AI) and virtual reality (VR) are playing an increasingly crucial role in training and improving clinical decision-making in complex cases. These innovations have the potential to further revolutionize cardiac anesthesia in the coming years.
