Integrating pH Value and Base Consumption in Online Monitoring of Organic Acid Production

Abstract:
Microbial organic acid production is always associated with either a pH decrease or corresponding base titration. Here, we present two methods for online monitoring of organic acid production via these phenomena and give relevant interpretation suggestions. In shake flask and microtiter scales, the pH value can be measured online to determine qualitative information on growth and production phase. For pH-controlled cultivations, a linear regression can be derived to correlate organic acid production with base consumption and hence quantitatively monitor the organic acid production.
