Abstract:
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Physical Status Classification System is a cornerstone of preoperative risk assessment, helping determine whether patients are appropriate candidates for office-based dental sedation. While ASA I to II patients are generally suitable for outpatient sedation, ASA III and higher often require additional workup or referral to a higher level of care. Cardiovascular disease remains the most significant comorbidity, requiring evaluation of functional capacity, Revised Cardiac Risk Index scoring, and appropriate diagnostic testing to reduce perioperative cardiac complications. Neurologic disorders further increase anesthetic risk through medication interactions and respiratory compromise, emphasizing individualized planning and emergency preparedness.
