Abstract:
Synthetic electrospun fiber materials (SEFMs) may offer a versatile tool for soft-tissue management in orthopedic trauma. Composed of bioresorbable synthetic polymers engineered to resemble extracellular matrix, SEFM supports cellular infiltration, revascularization, and mechanical reinforcement of primary closures. Preclinical studies demonstrate improved wound healing, tensile strength comparable to human skin, and in vitro passing results per United States Pharmacopeia <51> Antimicrobial Effectiveness standards. Clinical evidence demonstrates both topical and subdermal use in open fractures, degloving injuries, Achilles repairs, and amputations. Reported outcomes include high closure rates and low complications, suggesting reduced risk of dehiscence, infection, and need for advanced reconstruction.
