Abstract:
Thioxanthone, a well-known photocatalyst, is shown to participate in proton-coupled electron transfer based on the reactive substrate employed in photochemical transformation. This mode of reactivity can be manipulated to overcome the endergonicity of electron transfer pathways, leading to chemical reactivity via the formation of a thioxanthyl ketyl radical.

Oxidation of Phenols to Quinones
o-hydroxy phenols are oxidized to o-quinones and p-hydroxy phenols to p-quinones. Such redox reactions involve the transfer of two electrons and two protons. The reversible redox property is crucial in...

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
