Staged Biventricular Conversion in an Older Adolescent Patient With a Hypoplastic Left Ventricle

Background:
A 17-year-old patient presented with a significantly hypoplastic and nonapex-reaching left ventricle (LV) and a large secundum atrial septal defect.
Case Summary:
Although LV rehabilitation at this age was uncertain, she underwent successful staged biventricular (biV) repair with fenestrated atrial septal defect closure followed by device closure of the fenestration.
Discussion:
biV repair in an older adolescent patient has not been reported. The ability to recruit ventricles in older patients is unknown. biV repair has been reported in younger patients, and adults diagnosed with a hypoplastic LV are treated with medical management. We present a successful staged biV conversion of an 18-year-old patient with a hypoplastic LV.

LV rehabilitation was achieved in an older adolescent patient through a staged approach.
