Effect of Order of Testing on Intraocular Pressure and Tear Production Measurement in Dogs

Objective:
To determine if the order of performing Schirmer tear test -1 (STT-1) and intraocular pressure (IOP) using a rebound tonometer influences the diagnostic values in a general population of dogs.
Animals Studied:
122 eyes from 61 dogs of a variety of signalments and presentations.
Procedures:
Dogs were randomly assigned into IOP first (Group A) and STT-1 first (Group B) groups. Each group had an STT-1 test, IOP measured by rebound tonometry, fluorescein staining, and a complete ocular examination.
Results:
No significant differences were found between Group A and Group B for either tear production (p = 0.62) or IOP (p = 0.27). There were no significant differences with gender for both groups, and no significant difference was found between left and right eyes for IOP when left eyes were measured first.
Conclusions:
The order of performing STT-1 and rebound tonometry has no significant effect on tear production or IOP for a general population of dogs. The order of testing is unlikely to have a clinically significant effect.
