Comparison of Autonomic Nervous System Modulation Between Conventional and Novel Cryoballoon Systems

Background:
Autonomic nervous system (ANS) modification with cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation using conventional cryoballoon (Arctic Front AdvanceTM) has been reported, but data on the novel cryoballoon (POLARxTM) remain limited.
Methods And Results:
This subanalysis of the CONTRAST-CRYO trial compared ANS modification in the first ablation of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF; 58 conventional, 47 novel), based on postprocedural sinus cycle length (SCL). The proportions of patients with ≥5/10/15/20% SCL reduction at 12 months were comparable between systems. Patients with ANS modification (≥20% SCL reduction) had lower baseline heart rates; however, AF-free survival did not differ.
Conclusions:
Both systems produced comparable ANS modification effects.
