United States Life Tables, 2024
Objectives:
This report presents complete period life tables for the United States by Hispanic origin and race and sex, based on age-specific death rates in 2024.
Methods:
Data used to prepare the 2024 life tables are 2024 final mortality statistics; July 1, 2024, population estimates based on the blended base population estimates produced by the U.S. Census Bureau; and 2024 Medicare data for people ages 66-99. The method used to estimate life tables for the Hispanic population has not changed since it was developed for the 2006 Hispanic-origin life tables. The same methodology is used to estimate the life tables for the American Indian and Alaska Native non-Hispanic and Asian non-Hispanic populations. The methodology used to estimate the 2024 life tables for all other groups was first implemented with data year 2008.
Results:
In 2024, the overall expectation of life at birth was 79.0 years, increasing 0.6 year from 78.4 years in 2023. Between 2023 and 2024, life expectancy at birth increased by 0.7 year for males (from 75.8 to 76.5) and 0.3 year for females (81.1 to 81.4). Between 2023 and 2024, life expectancy increased by 1.0 year for the American Indian and Alaska Native non-Hispanic population (70.1 to 71.1), 0.8 year for the Black non-Hispanic population (74.0 to 74.8), 0.6 year for the Asian non-Hispanic population (85.2 to 85.8), 0.5 year for the Hispanic population (81.3 to 81.8), and 0.5 year for the White non-Hispanic population (78.4 to 78.9).
