A case of emphysematous cystitis with significant quantity and atypical gas distribution on CT

Abstract:
Emphysematous cystitis is a fulminant infection of the bladder caused by gas-producing bacteria. It is characterized by air within the bladder wall and lumen on imaging. We present a case of emphysematous cystitis in an 84-year-old male with mild abdominal pain found to have features of diffuse and atypical gas distribution on computed tomography (CT). Given consistent hemodynamic stability and lack of systemic infection symptoms, we elected to treat this patient with conservative measures. This is the first published case report of emphysematous cystitis with retroperitoneal, inguinal and scrotal air pockets seen on imaging.
