Blood Sampling Techniques for Wild Native Chilean Rodents

Blood sampling is a critical component of wildlife research, particularly in studies of wildlife diseases. However, limited information exists on venipuncture sites for Chilean wild rodent species, such as the olive-colored akodont (Abrothrix olivaceus), Darwin's pericote (Phyllotis darwini), and degu (Octodon degus). Here, we describe field-tested venipuncture sites that allowed the collection of measurable blood volumes suitable for molecular detection of Trypanosoma cruzi in these species, based on fieldwork conducted in Chile's semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem. We provide anatomical illustrations and practical recommendations for non-lethal blood collection. This short communication aims to assist researchers in obtaining reliable blood samples while ensuring animal welfare and minimizing stress.
