Abstract:
Medical ultrasound is an essential diagnostic modality that requires both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In undergraduate medical education, ultrasound training involves not only image acquisition but also a fundamental understanding of anatomy, physiology, ultrasound physics, instrumentation, and clinical interpretation. The aim of this article is to provide a structured overview of the key principles relevant to undergraduate ultrasound education and to discuss current controversies in curriculum design. This narrative educational review synthesizes existing literature, guideline recommendations, and perspectives from the Student Ultrasound Education (SUSE) initiative to outline essential learning objectives and core components of training. Fundamental concepts including ultrasound physics, the piezoelectric effect, probes, imaging modes, and basic system controls ("knobology") are summarized. Standard scanning techniques, probe manipulation, image resolution, and common artifacts are explained with emphasis on their relevance for clinical practice. The review also addresses reporting standards, terminology, ergonomics, hygiene, quality assurance, and safety aspects such as adherence to the ALARA principle. In addition, current debates in ultrasound education are discussed, including the timing of training within the curriculum, the role of simulation, the use of handheld devices, and the integration of digital learning tools and artificial intelligence. Overall, structured and longitudinal ultrasound education that integrates theoretical foundations with supervised clinical practice is essential for preparing medical students for responsible use of ultrasound in clinical care.
