Histoplasmosis in Pregnancy: A Review and Patient Perspective

Histoplasmosis is rarely diagnosed in pregnancy, though when disseminated it may infect the infant as well. Decisions regarding antifungal therapy in pregnant women can be difficult due to known toxicity risks and lack of rigorous study. Here we review the published literature regarding histoplasmosis in pregnancy as well as antifungal therapy in pregnancy and duration lactation. We also bring our clinical experience with a disseminated histoplasmosis case affecting both mother and infant, as well as the mother's perspective in her own words. "Sharing our story is important to me because I hope it can help others. The more information that exists about rare infections and treatments during pregnancy, the better doctors will be able to help families facing similar challenges."
