[Complicated wound healing : Current therapeutic concepts]

The article addresses the challenges associated with difficult to heal and chronic wounds. Chronic wounds should be treated according to a set algorithm that, following the diagnosis and treatment of the underlying cause of the healing impairment, proceeds via local measures such as treating any local infection through wound cleansing, management of exudation to create a physiological, stage-adapted wound environment and stabilizing the surrounding skin, ultimately leading to secondary wound closure. Finally, an overview is given on the mode of action and evidence for current individual innovations in local wound treatment.
