Chemical selection of a low-symmetry macrocycle emerges from competitive crystallization-driven template

Abstract:
Crystallization-driven template autocatalysis translates molecular competition into quantifiable chemical selection, enriching a specific low-symmetry naphthalocyanine macrocycle via solvent-free reactive crystallization and template amplification, which offers a powerful model for evolutionary selection in artificial self-replicating systems.

Selection Rules: Thermal Activation
Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
Crystal Growth: Principles of Crystallization
Initiating crystallization involves manipulating the concentration of the solute and the temperature of the solution. Since crystal growth occurs when the ratio of concentration and solubility of the solute in the solvent – the...
