Purpose:
This randomized, controlled, crossover, within-subjects study investigated effects of a gently vibrating sleep mask on objectively measured sleep outcomes.
Methods:
Adults with mild sleep difficulties (n = 91, 69% women, mean age = 45) tracked sleep at home with a polysomnography-validated noncontact device for three 14-night periods (baseline, vibrating mask, control mask).
Results:
When wearing the vibrating mask compared to the control mask, controlling for baseline, participants objectively spent more time in bed (+ 11.11 min), slept longer (+ 11.87 min), increased deep sleep (+ 3.09 min), and spent less of the night in light sleep (-1.8% relative difference).
Conclusions:
A mask administering gentle vibration may be associated with improved sleep outcomes among adults with mild sleep difficulties.
