Abstract:
Tandem ring-opening/ring-closing metathesis (RO/RCM) polymerization was employed to access ester-functional poly(olefin)s as functional coating materials. A methyl carboxylate-substituted cycloolefin monomer afforded poly(methyl-carboxylate cycloolefin) P1 and its aromatic amine-blended analogue P2, both of which formed smooth and homogeneous coatings on glass and wood substrates. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed continuous nanoscale film morphologies with low surface roughness, while water contact angle measurements demonstrated hydrophobic surface behavior with contact angles of up to 100°. NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses indicated weak intermolecular interactions between the ester and amine functionalities in P2, accompanied by enhanced thermal stability relative to P1. These results demonstrate that tandem RO/RCM polymerization provides an alternative route toward acrylic-like coating materials based on metathesis-derived poly(olefin) architectures.

Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...
