Abstract:
Hemipiperazines are an emerging class of robust molecular photoswitches based on a 2,5-diketopiperazine scaffold. We resolve the excited-state pathway responsible for efficient photoisomerisation of a model hydrogen-bonded hemipiperazine photoswitch using ultrafast time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and temperature-dependent fluorescence measurements.

Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
